A spitballer legally allowed to use the pitch after its banning, Russell was primarily a reliever. He led the AL with five saves for the Yankees and Red Sox in 1919 and with nine for the Senators in 1923. His brother, Lefty Russell, pitched in 13 games for the A’s (1910-12).
