A backup catcher for Washington most of his career, Tate was behind the plate when Babe Ruth hit his 58th and 59th home runs of the 1927 season, thus tying the Bambino’s previous single-season home run record. He pinch-hit three times for the Senators in their victorious 1924 World Series, walking each time.
