Townsend was a hard thrower with control problems who, in 1904, was one of three pitchers to lose 20 games for the 38-113 Senators. His 26 losses is still the AL record. No stranger to defeat, he preceded the ’04 season with a 2-11 mark and followed by going 7-16.
