Shaw was sometimes a flake but often a very good pitcher. He wrote an instructional manual called Pitching and in his good years was a fine exemplar. In 1959 he was a mainstay of the pennant-winning White Sox, going 18-6 (2.69) and leading the AL in winning percentage (.750). He won 15 games for the Braves in 1962 and 16 for the Giants in 1965. At other times he was not only far less effective, he could be a thorn in the side of management. When Bill Veeck‘s White Sox wouldn’t give him the raise he felt he deserved for 1960, he reportedly stood atop a catwalk outside Comiskey Park and shouted down to fans, “We’re not going to win! Why are you people here?”
