Vinnie Smith

Smith’s ML playing career was brief and interrupted by military duty. After managing Richmond in the Piedmont League for two years, he turned to umpiring. Smith was behind the plate on May 26, 1959, when Harvey Haddix pitched 12 perfect innings before losing his masterpiece to Milwaukee in the 13th. Smith worked both All-Star Games in 1960, one of only six umpires ever to do so.
