Stewart nearly died in 1927 when his appendix burst while he was on a winter hunting trip. Although he recovered, he was told his career was over. Browns manager Dan Howley, for whom he’d pitched in the minors, gave Stewart a chance with St. Louis. In 1930 he was 20-12 for the fifth-place Browns, with five wins over the second-place Senators. Washington acquired Stewart in a 1933 trade that also brought Goose Goslin back to the capitol. When the Senators won the 1933 pennant, Stewart, 15-6 on the season, started but lost the opening game of the WS.
