Called up by the Phillies in mid-1927, Sweetland defeated Boston 5-4 in his ML debut, but lost 25 of his next 29 decisions over two seasons. In 1929, when he managed a 13-11 record despite a 5.11 ERA, one of his wins was an 11-hit shutout at Pittsburgh.
