The epitome of the longtime reliever who puts together one great season, Bair maxed out in 1978 with the Reds. Theretofore an erratic hard thrower, he was suddenly brilliant, winning 7 games, saving 28 and posting a 1.98 ERA in 70 appearances. His ERA ballooned to 4.29 the next year, although he won 11 and saved 16.
Bair would pitch well later in his career, but he never again approached his 1978 performance. In the 1980s, he hopped from St. Louis to Detroit to Oakland to Philadelphia to Toronto, and finally to Pittsburgh, where he had begun his career in 1976.
