Bateman battled weight problems throughout his career, paying over $2,000 in overweight fines. His best year was 1966, when he batted .279 and hit 17 homers for Houston. On September 29, 1970, he hit the final home run at Philadelphia’s Connie Mack Stadium. During the late 1970s he traveled with Eddie Feigner’s King and His Court four-man softball team.
