Beckman first made the majors at age 32 in 1939 and enjoyed his best season the next year, going 8-4 with the A’s. He was sent down to Rochester early in 1942, but earned a September call-up by the Cardinals. The Cards won the pennant by two games, one of which was Beckmann’s clutch win in his last ML appearance.
