Johnson was given the White Sox’ starting shortstop job in 1921 when Swede Risberg was banned for fixing the 1919 WS. He hit .295 that year, but clumsy fielding and a 1923 salary holdout prompted his sale to the Yankees. His son Don was a Cubs second baseman.
