Les Lancaster

Lancaster started 18 games as a rookie for the Cubs in 1987 but was dispatched to the bullpen the following year. He played a vital role in the Cubs’ 1989 NL East championship, saving eight games with a 1.36 ERA (4-2) behind stopper Mitch Williams. He won Game Two of the LCS against the Giants 9-5 with four innings of relief, although he gave up three runs. He came into the seventh inning of Game Three with a runner on, the Cubs winning 4-3, and a 1-0 count on Robby Thompson, who had homered off him the previous day. Thinking the count was 2-0, he threw another ball, then grooved what he thought was a 3-0 fastball; Thompson hit another HR, and the Giants won 5-4.
