The son of Vern Law, Vance was drafted by Pittsburgh in 1978, traded to the White Sox in March 1982 and became Chicago’s everyday third baseman in 1983. On May 8 and 9, 1984 against the Brewers, he played all 25 innings of the longest game in AL history, establishing the AL record for the longest errorless game by a third baseman. He erupted with 17 homers in 1984 but then was traded to Montreal for Bob James. Manager Buck Rodgers made good use of Law’s talents in 1985-87, even using him as a relief pitcher six times. Law signed with the Cubs as a free agent for 1988, had a productive first half, and made the NL All-Star team. A bad back limited him in 1989, and he struck out in all three of his LCS at-bats.
