Sam Leslie

Leslie was a solid hitter but mediocre fielder, leading one writer to comment: “He could hit if you woke him up at two in the morning but couldn’t field if you played him at two in the afternoon.” A top pinch hitter with the Giants (22 for 72 in 1932), he was traded to the Dodgers for Lefty O’Doul and Watty Clark in 1933. After four years as a regular, he was sold back to the Giants, where his pinch hitting contributed to pennants in 1936 and 1937.
