Martin has been heard on Red Sox radio and television broadcasts since 1961, acknowledging outstanding plays with a subdued “Mercy!” Originally paired on radio with Curt Gowdy and then Ken Coleman, he was at his best with Jim Woods until 1978, when the pair were let go, and Martin moved into the Red Sox television booth the following season.
