January 1Major league owners lock out the 64 AL and NL umpires.
January 4Five bills aimed at ending the baseball strike are introduced in Congress.
January 5According to players’ union chief Donald Fehr‚ all 835 unsigned major league players are free agents since the owners unilaterally changed the uniform contract.
January 9Mike Schmidt is elected to baseball’s Hall of Fame by the Baseball Writers Association of America.
January 10Arbitrator Thomas Roberts awards 11 players a total of almost $10 million as a result of collusion charges brought against the owners.
January 13Use of replacement players for spring training and regular season games is okayed by baseball’s executive council. Acting commissioner Bud Selig announces‚ “We are committed to playing the 1995 season and will do so with the best players willing to play.”
January 18Former American League umpire Ron Luciano dies in Endicott‚ New York of carbon monoxide poisoning. His death is ruled a suicide.
January 19Baltimore owner Peter Angelos announces that his team will not use replacement players.
January 26Players and owners are told by President Clinton to resume bargaining and reach an agreement by February 6.

February 1The owners agree to revoke their arbitrarily imposed salary cap and return to the old agreement.

Darryl Strawberry is suspended for 60 days for violation of baseball’s drug policy and his aftercare program. He is also released by the Giants.
February 9Darryl Strawberry pleads guilty to income tax evasion and will spend 3 months in prison‚ in addition to paying back taxes‚ interest‚ and penalties.
February 13The Dodgers sign Japanese League All-Star P Hideo Nomo for a reported $2 million bonus.
February 14Plans are announced for the new United League to begin play in 1996.
February 17Tigers manager Sparky Anderson is put on an involuntary leave of absence as he refuses to manage replacement players. The Orioles announce they will not play exhibition games against teams using replacement players.
February 19The Blue Jays assign manager Cito Gaston and his coaching staff to work with minor league players so that they will not have to deal with replacement players.
February 23Former NL MVP Kevin Mitchell signs with the Daiei Hawks of the Japanese League.

March 1Angels replacement players play Arizona State University in an exhibition game. It is the 1st time since 1912 that replacement players have appeared in a game in major league uniforms.
March 2The 1st-ever trade of replacement players is made between the Reds and Indians. The Reds obtain former major league Barbaro Garbey and 4 others in return for “future considerations.”

At a meeting in Chicago‚ owners accept the players’ offer to return to work.
March 7The Veterans Committee elects former major leaguers Richie Ashburn‚ and Vic Willis‚ former NL president William Hulbert‚ and former Negro League player Leon Day to the Hall of Fame. Day will die of a heart attack 6 days from now.
March 9Baseball owners vote 28-0 to admit 2 new teams-the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and the Arizona Diamondbacks-for the 1998 season. Each team will pay an expansion fee of $130 million. The D’Backs hire lawyer Joe Garagiola‚ Jr‚ as their first GM.
March 10Basketball superstar Michael Jordan announces he is giving up baseball and returning to the NBA. Playing for the minor league Birmingham Barons last year‚ Jordan hit .202 in 127 games‚ collecting 3 homers in 436 at bats. He did swipe 30 bases.
March 14The players’ union announces that it will not settle the strike if replacement players are used in regular season games‚ and if results are not voided.
March 20The Orioles cancel the remainder of their spring training games because of the team’s refusal to use replacement players.
March 21The Maryland House of Delegates approves legislation to bar teams playing at Camden Yards from using replacement players.
March 25Replacement player Dave Shotkoski‚ a pitcher with the Braves‚ is shot to death in a robbery attempt near the team’s hotel in West Palm Beach‚ Florida.
March 26The season opens‚ reduced to 144 games.
March 27The National Labor Relations board files for an injunction to restore previous work rules to the game.
March 29Players vote to return to work if a U.S. District Court judge supports the NLRB’s unfair labor practices complaint against the owners. By a vote of 26-2‚ owners support the use of replacement players.
March 30In a conference call vote‚ the woners vote 26-2 to authorize the use of replacement players for the season. Initially‚ George Steinbrenner votes against it but changes his mind to show solidarity with Bud Selig. Toronto and Baltimore vote against it.
March 31U.S. District Judge Sonia Sotomayor issues a preliminary injunction requiring baseball owners to comply with the expired collective bargaining agreement. In 5 days‚ the 2nd Court of Appeals will deny the owners request to stay Sotomayor’s decision.

April 2The owners reluctantly welcome the players back and‚ meeting in Chicago‚ they devise a plan for a 144-game schedule to begin April 26. Yesterday’s Marlins-Mets opener was postponed.
April 5The Yankees obtain P John Wetteland from the Expos in exchange for minor league OF Fernando Seguignol‚ a player to be named‚ and cash considerations.

The Royals trade OF Brian McRae to the Cubs in exchange for pitchers Derek Wallace and Geno Morones.

The Expos trade their ace Ken Hill (16-5) to the Cardinals for pitchers Bryan Eversgerd and Kirk Bollinger‚ and OF Darond Stovall.
April 6The Blue Jays acquire David Cone (16-5) from the Royals in exchange for infielders Chris Stynes and Anthony Medrano‚ and P David Sinnes.

The Braves obtain OF Marquis Grissom from the Expos in exchange for outfielders Roberto Kelly and Tony Tarasco.
April 7The Marlins sign free agent IF Terry Pendleton‚ the NL’s MVP in 1991.
April 8The Rockies sign free agent OF Larry Walker and free agent P Bill Swift.

The Indians sign free agent P Orel Hershiser.

April 13The Tigers trade OF Tony Phillips to the Angels for OF Chad Curtis.
April 18Veteran P Jack Morris announces his retirement after 17 years and 254 victories.
April 20The Pirates release Tim Wakefield‚ 8-1 in 1993 and the NL Rookie pitcher of the Year. The knuckleballer started the 1994 opener‚ but spent most of the season in Buffalo (International League) going 5-15‚ and was shelled in his only start this spring. Wakefield will be picked up by the Red Sox.

Jeff Reardon‚ 39‚ announces his retirement. He is 2nd on the all-time list for saves (367).

Dodgers president Peter O’Malley donates the Brooklyn Dodgers’ 1955 World Championship banner to the borough in which it was won‚ saying‚ “The flag belongs in Brooklyn.”
April 24Darryl Strawberry is sentenced to 6 months of home confinement on tax evasion charges. He must also pay the government $350‚000 in back taxes.
April 25The 234-day strike ends. The 1st game pits the Dodgers against the Marlins. LA wins‚ 8-7‚ but the game is played with replacement umpires‚ as the regular umps continue to be locked out.
April 26Fans in Pittsburgh disrupt Opening Day by throwing sticks on the field‚ and holding up the action for 17 minutes. Montreal eventually wins the game by a score of 6-2.

Despite just 6‚300 fans at the Yanks pre-opening workout‚ 50‚245 show up for the opener‚ the smallest opening crowd at the Stadium since 1990. The Yankees start with a win‚ 8-6‚ over the Rangers‚ as Jimmy Key goes 5 innings to pick up the win. It is his 3rd straight opener and his Opening Day record is 6-0. Kenny Rogers is the loser‚ giving up 4 runs in 3 innings‚ including a homer to Danny Tartabull. Bernie Williams also homers.

At Kansas City‚ Royals Kevin Appier is lifted after 6 2/3 innings of no hit ball. Appier had thrown just 11 1/3 innings in spring training and manager Bob Boone does not want to risk injury. Appier is ahead 3-0 when he exits and the Royals win 5-1. Nolan Ryan‚ in the 1990 opener‚ also was lifted in a no hitter because of limited work in spring training.

Toronto scores 11 runs in the 2nd inning and coasts home to a 13-1 win over the Oakland A’s. The 11 runs is the most scored in an inning on Opening Day this century‚ but will be matched in 3 years by San Diego.
April 27Milwaukee’s starter Cal Eldred picks up a win with 5 innings of work in a 9-5 win over the White Sox. Tim Raines and Frank Thomas hit consecutive homers in the 7th with 2 out‚ and then in the 8th Robin Ventura hits Alberto Reyes first ML pitch for another homer.
April 28The Ontario Labor Board announces that replacement umpires will not be allowed to work in Blue Jay home games. Under Ontario law‚ replacement workers may not be used during a strike or lockout.

The Giants play Opening Day at 3Com Stadium‚ the new name for Candlestick Park. The day is a success for the Jints‚ as they shut out Florida‚ 4-0.

In Venezuela‚ former ML player Gus Palidor is murdered by two men who are trying to steal his car. Palidor had just returned from spring training‚ where he had been trying to catch on as a replacement player.

May 1The owners and umpires reach agreement on a 5-year contract‚ ending the lockout. Regular umpires will return to work on May 3.
May 2Hideo Nomo hurls 5 innings for the Dodgers in a 13-inning‚ 4-3 loss to the Giants‚ becoming the 1st Japanese player to appear in the major leagues since 1964. He allows only 1 hit and no runs‚ while walking 4 and striking out 7. The game is scoreless after 12 innings‚ before the Dodgers plate 3 runs in the top of the 13th. The Giants come back with 4 in their half of the inning for the win.

The Indians defeat the Tigers‚ 11-1‚ on opening day in Detroit. Fans run onto the field and throw bottles‚ baseballs‚ and batteries from the bleachers. 20 fans are arrested.

The Red Sox defeat the Yankees‚ 8-0. Boston scores its runs on grand slams in back-to-back innings by former college teammates John Valentin and Mo Vaughn. According to SABR statistician David Vincent‚ it is the 1st time ever that 2 grand slams account for all the runs scored in a game.
May 3David Bell makes his ML debut at 3B in the Indians 14-7 win over the Tigers. His appearance makes the Bells-with his father Buddy and his grandfather Gus-the second three-generation family in ML history (The Boones are the first). Gus Bell will pass away in 4 days.
May 4The Mets defeat the Expos‚ 5-1‚ in 10 innings on Todd Hundley’s pinch-hit grand slam. Hundley becomes only the 11th player in history to hit a PH grand slam in extra innings.
May 6In 7 NL games‚ the 14 teams score a total of 118 runs to tie a record as the highest-scoring day in NL history. Seven of the teams score at least 10 runs‚ led by the Dodgers who plate 17 in their 17-11 win over Colorado. Three pinch hit homers (Mitch Webster‚ John Vanderwal‚ Mike Kingery) are struck in that game‚ tying the NL & ML record‚ with 2 hit by Colorado‚ tying a ML record.
May 7The Indians pound out 26 hits in their 17-inning‚ 10-9 victory over the Twins. Eddie Murray drives home 5 runs as 4 players get 4 hits each in the contest.

Atlanta manager Bobby Cox is arrested by police at his home‚ and jailed overnight‚ as he is charged with simple battery. He is accused of punching his wife and pulling her hair. The couple will appear together at a news conference to deny that he assaulted her. Mrs. Cox called police to request their help in breaking up an argument.
May 9The Indians score 8 runs before any outs are recorded in the 1st inning‚ tying a major league record. Paul Sorrento‚ Kenny Lofton and Carlos Baerga each hit HRs in the stanza‚ as Cleveland goes on to a 10-0 victory behind Orel Hershiser and Paul Assenmacher.

California DH Chili Davis leads the Angels to an 11-2 win over Texas by notching 5 hits and driving home 5 runs. Davis’ safeties include a double and HR.

High school star Shawn Gallagher is intentionally walked his last time up and goes hitless. Entering the game‚ Gallagher‚ from Wilmington‚ Delaware‚ had hit safely in 51 straight games‚ tying the prep mark set by Stan Brown of Noblesville‚ Indiana.
May 12Against the Pirates‚ Matt Williams hits his 7th and 8th HRs of the season‚ and in the process breaks‚ in a manner of speaking‚ Roger Maris‘ 162-game home run record. Williams hit 62 HRs in 161 games spread over 3 seasons: 11 HRs in the last 30 games of 1993‚ 43 homers in 115 games in 1994‚ and 8 HRs in the first 16 games of 1995.

The Tigers defeat the Rangers‚ 6-1‚ with Buddy Groom getting the win. It is Groom’s 1st victory in 77 game appearances over 4 seasons in the majors. The win lets Groom narrowly avoid breaking the record set by Braves P Ed Olwine‚ who went winless in 80 appearances from 1986 to 1988.

The Dodgers defeat the Cardinals‚ 8-4‚ in a sloppy game marked by an even dozen errors. Third basemen Scott Cooper of St.‚ Louis and Garey Ingram of LA each make 3 miscues. It is the most errors made in an NL game since June 11‚ 1959.

The White Sox sign free agent 1B John Kruk.
May 13The San Bernardino Spirit defeats San Jose‚ 1-0‚ in 21 innings in the longest shutout in California League history. C Paul Konerko’s hit drives home the game’s only run.

Frank Castillo allows 3 hits in 8 1/3 innings and Shawon Dunston hits a 3-run homer as the Cubs beat San Diego‚ 5-0. Two of the Padre hits are by Tony Gwynn‚ who has hit .402 in his last 162 games stretching back to July 27‚ 1993. Wad Boggs has also hit .400 over 162 games in more than one season (June 1985- June 1986).
May 15Ramon Martinez‚ Rudy Seanez‚ and Todd Worrell combine on a 1-hitter as the Dodgers shut out the Pirates‚ 4-0‚ to move them within 2 games of Colorado for the lead in the NL West.

The Mariners trade P Roger Salkeld to the Reds in exchange for P Tim Belcher.
May 16Just 10 days after the record for the highest-scoring day in NL history is tied‚ 4 shutouts are tossed‚ by the Cubs‚ Mets‚ Padres‚ and Pirates. It is the 1st time this has happened since 1991.
May 17LA pitcher Hideo Nomo hurls 7 innings of 2-hit shutout ball‚ fanning 14 batters in the process‚ but still fails to record a win. The Pirates score twice in the 8th and once in the 9th to eke out a 3-2 victory.
May 18The Walt Disney Company becomes the managing partner of the Angels by purchasing 25% of the team.
May 20Brewers’ P Ron Rightnowar, who was called up from the minors yesterday, makes his major league debut by hurling 2 1/3 innings of relief in Milwaukee’s 7-6 loss to Texas. In doing so, he becomes the 1st replacement player to appear in a major league game this season. Rightnowar takes over for Sid Roberson, also making his ML debut, who gets thumbed out of the game for hitting a batter with a pitch. Boston OF Ron Mahay, another replacement player, was also called up yesterday, but will not get in a game until tomorrow.

The Mariners obtain P Salomon Torres from the Giants for pitching prospect Shawn Estes and IF Wilson Delgado.
May 22The Durham Bulls and Winston-Salem Warthogs engage in a brawl which sees 10 players ejected in a Carolina League game. Winston-Salem P Glen Cullop is knocked unconscious in the melee which occurs on “Strike Out Domestic Violence Night.” A total of $6‚000 in fines is levied‚ and 124 games in suspensions.
May 23Houston OF Derek Bell strokes 5 hits‚ including a pair of doubles‚ but the Astros still lose to the Reds by a score of 10-5.
May 24The White Sox and Rangers play the longest doubleheader in major league history‚ taking 7 hours and 39 minutes to complete the twinbill. Chicago wins the opener‚ 10-8‚ while the Rangers take the nightcap‚ 13-6.

Seattle 3B Mike Blowers drives in 8 runs in the Mariners’ 15-6 victory over the Red Sox. He strokes 4 extra base hits in the contest-2 doubles‚ a triple‚ and a HR. The hits raise Blowers’ average 61 points-from .118 to .179.

The Expos trade OF Roberto Kelly and P Joey Eischen to the Dodgers in exchange for OF Henry Rodriguez and IF Jeff Treadway.
May 25Minnesota relief P Mark Guthrie hurls 6 innings against Detroit‚ fanning 12‚ to get the win in the Twins’ 4-3 victory over the Tigers. It is the most batters struck out by a relief in 15 years.
May 26At the Kingdome‚ Ken Griffey hits a 5th inning homer‚ then breaks 2 bones in his left wrist making a spectacular catch against the RF wall. He will miss 73 games but will return to play with a 4 inch metal plate attached to his wrist. Seattle wins‚ 8-3 over Baltimore as Randy Johnson (5-0) strikes out 13 in 6 2/3 innings.

Phillies rookie Michael Mimbs pitches a 2-0. 2-hit shutout over San Diego. Andy Benes (0-5) takes the loss‚ his 10th straight loss over 2 years.

In the West Regional‚ USC and Fresno State combine for 39 runs‚ a NCAA record for the post season‚ with the Trojans coming out on the long end of a 22-17 win. Houston and USC set the previous record of 36 runs in 1990.
May 27Steve Ontiveros hurls a 1-hit‚ 3-0 shutout over the Yankees. Luis Polonia gets the only hit for the New Yorkers as Ontiveros fans 7 and walks only 2. The victory moves the Athletics to within 1 game of the Angels for the lead in the AL West.

The White Sox edge the Tigers‚ 1-0‚ behind Jason Bere. Bere had previously allowed 23 runs in 28 innings.
May 28In a 14-12 White Sox win‚ the Tigers and Chicago combine to hit 12 HRs-7 by the Tigers-and 21 extra-base hits to set a major league record (since tied) and AL mark‚ respectively. The 2-teams combine to set a ML for extra bases on long hits (45)‚ with Detroit contributing 24. The Sox start rookie James Baldwin (25 hits‚ 15 runs in 13.1 innings) and Detroit remainders him with a leadoff HR by Curtis‚ a walk‚ single and 3-run homer by Fielder. Curtis and Fielder each homer in the 2nd to finish the rookie. The Sox sink David Wells with successive homers in the 4th by Durham‚ Karkovice‚ and Grebeck. Cecil Fielder‚ Chad Curtis‚ Kirk Gibson‚ and Ron Karkovice each homer twice‚ setting another AL mark for the most players with 2 HRs in a game. Ray Durham‚ Craig Grebeck‚ Frank Thomas‚ and Lou Whitaker also connect for 4-baggers. Detroit’s Danny Bautista‚ anxious to join the HR derby‚ fans 5 times (on 18 pitches) in 6 at bats to tie another mark for a 9 inning game.

The Braves Greg Maddux allows one hit-an 8th inning homer by Jeff Bagwell-in downing the Astros‚ 3-1.

The Padres defeat the Phillies‚ 13-5 in 10 innings. The 9 runs they score in the 10th ties the NL mark for runs scored in a 10th inning. The 1947 Reds also accomplished the feat.
May 29Marlins P Chris Hammond hits a grand slam in Florida’s 9-7 win over the Astros. He is the 1st pitcher to connect for a HR with the bases full since 1986. Marlins’ 3B Terry Pendleton gets 5 hits in the game‚ including a double and triple.
May 30Former Dodger and Athletic OF Glenn Burke dies of AIDS at the age of 42. Burke‚ thought to be the originator of the “high five‚” was the only former major league player to have admitted to being gay‚ though it was well-known during his playing.

June 1The Rangers defeat the Twins‚ 6-3‚ behind Kenny Rogers. Minnesota scores its 1st run in the 7th inning‚ ending Rogers’ scoreless-inning streak at 39. The victory brings Texas to within 1 1/2 games of California for the AL West lead.

The California Angels select Nebraska OF Darin Erstad with the 1st pick in the amateur draft. He’ll sign for a $1.6 bonus‚ the highest signing bonus to date. Picking next‚ the Padres take high school C Ben Davis‚ and the Mariners pick Jose Cruz‚ Jr. The Cubs follow with Texas high schooler Kerry Wood. The 5th pick‚ P Ariel Prieto‚ will skip the minors and debut with the A’s on July 5. Picking 7th‚ the Rangers pass over Todd Helton to take P Jonathan Johnson. Picking next‚ Colorado takes Helton. The Brewers take future starting OF Geoff Jenkins in the first round‚ but the rest of their picks will be busts. The Red Sox take pitcher Andy Yount with #15‚ but a kitchen knife slicing injury will shorten his career. Sean Casey goes to the Indians on round 2‚ and the Royals take Carlos Beltran on the same round. Gabe Kaplan goes to the Tigers on the 57th round. The Mets strike out in the first round (18th) with SS Ryan Jaroncyk; picking in the same spot 4 years ago they took OF Al Shirley.
June 2The Red Sox defeat the Mariners‚ 6-5‚ as John Valentin has one of the best hitting days ever by a shortstop. Valentin goes 5-for-5‚ with 3 HRs and 4 runs scored. In doing so‚ he becomes the 1st SS ever to have 15 total bases in a game. He’s the 8th Sox player to collect 3 homers in a game.

Veteran 2B Jose Lind walks out on the Royals after his wife files for divorce. The Royals don’t invite him back‚ either.

The White Sox fire manager Gene Lamont. 3B coach Terry Bevington is named to replace him.
June 3Pitching against the Padres‚ Expos P Pedro Martinez (4-1) retires the first 27 batters‚ only to see the Pods Bip Roberts lead off the 10th inning with a double. Reliever Mel Rojas then retires the next three batters. San Diego starter Joey Hamilton is almost as good‚ giving up just 3 hits and no runs through 9 innings. Reliever Brian Williams yields Jeff Treadway‘s RBI single in the top of the 10th. With the rules regarding no-hitters revised in 1991‚ Martinez receives credit for neither a perfect game nor a no-hitter. The win moves the Expos to within 3 games of the NL East-leading Phillies.

Rangers 3B Dean Palmer‚ hitting .333 with 9 HRs and 24 RBIs in his first 114 at-bat‚ ruptures the biceps tendon in his left arm while swinging at‚ and missing‚ a pitch from Minnesota’s Kevin Tapani. Palmer will be sidelined until the final week of the season. Tapani goes on to shut out Texas‚ 4-0.

The Giants recall replacement IF Joel Chimelis from Phoenix. SF players will call meetings in protest of his presence and he will be returned to the minors in 2 days without appearing in a game.
June 5Reds owner Marge Schott is cleared of any wrongdoing by a jury in the Tim Sabo ‘s suit about wrongful firing. Sabo was fired in August of 1991.
June 6J.D. Drew sets a college World Series record by hitting homers in his final 3 at bats as his Florida State team loses‚ 16-11 to Southern Cal. The 12 total bases is also a record.
June 8The Rangers defeat the Royals‚ 10-9 in 10 innings‚ scoring all their runs after the 6th frame. In a 6-run 8th inning‚ Texas ties a major league record by getting 4 pinch-hits. Rusty Greer‚ Mike Pagliarulo‚ Shawn Hare‚ and Ivan Rodriguez all come through with singles as the Rangers cut the lead to 8-7. Texas almost wins it in the 9th when they load the bases but‚ out of position players‚ P Bob Tewksbury strikes out as a pinch hitter. Greer wins it in the 10th with a leadoff homer. The win keeps the Rangers within 1/2 game of the Angels in the race for the AL West lead.

The first two Oriole hitters‚ Brady Anderson and Kevin Bass‚ homer to lead the O’s to a 8-2 win over Seattle. Jeff Mantos has a pair of 2-run homers to back Mike Mussina‘s pitching.

The Expos acquire 1B/OF David Segui from the Mets in exchange for P Reid Cornelius.
June 9The Padres defeat the Mets‚ 8-4‚ behind Joey Hamilton. To make his day complete‚ Hamilton doubles off Mets P Pete Harnisch for his 1st hit in 58 major league at bats.
June 10Orioles rookie 3B Jeff Manto homers in the 2nd inning for his 4th consecutive round-tripper to tie the record for homers in consecutive games. The Orioles defeat the Angels‚ 6-2.

Cal State Fullerton defeats Southern Cal‚ 11-5‚ to win the College WS. Mark Kotsay blasts 2 homers for the winners.

The Red Sox obtain IF Chris Donnels from the Astros in exchange for a player to be named.
June 11Oakland’s Mark McGwire hits 3 consecutive HRs in an 8-1 win over the Red Sox. McGwire hit 2 HRs yesterday‚ giving him a ML record-tying 5 HRs in 2 consecutive games. He is the 15th player to hit 5 homers in 2 games‚ and only the 2nd to do so twice in his career. He also hit 5 homers on June 27 and 28‚ 1987. Ralph Kiner performed the feat twice in 1947.

Cincinnati defeats Houston‚ 3-2‚ in 10 innings on Ron Gant‘s HR. It is Gant’s 4th extra-inning homer of the season‚ tying him with Willie Mays for the NL record. Charlie Maxwell hit 5 for the Tigers in 1960.

The Giants score 4 times in the bottom of the 9th inning in their game with Montreal to tie the score at 8-8‚ but the Expos score twice in the 13th to win‚ 10-8.
