Big Jeff Pfeffer

Big Jeff Pfeffer was the older brother of more-successful pitcher Jeff Pfeffer, though neither was really named Jeff. The name was first given to Francis Xavier when he came up in 1905 while James J. Jeffries (Big Jeff) was the heavyweight champ; Pfeffer resembled the prizefighter. He hurled a no-hitter for the Braves against the Reds in 1907. Edward Joseph Pfeffer came along in 1911, Big Jeff’s last season, and was called simply Jeff.
