Bill Lohrman

According to some historians, Lohrman invented the slider. Others merely credit him as one of the first to use the pitch extensively. A Giants starter from 1938 to 1941, he was traded to the Cardinals in December 1941 as part of the deal that brought Johnny Mize to New York, but after pitching five games for St. Louis in 1942 he was sold back to the Giants. Lohrman went on to have his best season, 14-5 and a 2.48 ERA.
