A product of the San Diego farm system, Long was a throw-in on the 1984 deal that sent Ozzie Guillen to the White Sox for LaMarr Hoyt. He was twenty-seven when he got his first ML win, a two-hit shutout against the Yankees on May 5, 1987. He became a long reliever and an adequate starter.
