Nicknamed “Rope” for his line-drive hitting, Boyd was the first Oriole regular to bat over .300 with .318 in 1957 and .309 the next year. Despite his high BA, he lacked the home run punch expected from a first baseman and was primarily a pinch hitter in his last seasons.
