Jones was 34 years old when he finally spent a full season in the majors, as an extra lefthanded bat with the 1984 Rangers. First signed by the Washington Senators in 1967, he became deaf in one ear during 14 months of combat in Vietnam. A standout hitter year after year in Triple-A, he left to play in Japan for 1979 and 1980. Two of his 17 ML doubles came in the 12-run 15th inning of a July 3, 1983 game between Texas and Oakland.
