Buddy Hassett

The steady-hitting first baseman was stuck in the Yankee farm system while Lou Gehrig was in his prime. Sold to Brooklyn, Hassett hit .310 his rookie year. Gehrig retired, and the Yankees traded top prospect Tommy Holmes to the Braves in 1942 to retrieve Hassett. His appearance with the Yankees in the 1942 WS, before entering the military, marked the end of his career.
