Hemphill was with the Cleveland Spiders when the best members of that team were transferred to St. Louis in 1899 by owners who controlled both teams at once. He managed the Yankees briefly when Hal Chase was ill, and later was a playing manager at Atlanta. His brother, Frank, played briefly for the White Sox and Senators.
