Bespectacled, quiet Danny MacFayden lasted 17 years in the majors, averaging less than eight wins a season. He compiled losing records with four straight last-place Red Sox teams before going 16-12 to help them out of the cellar in 1931. After beginning the 1932 season 1-10, he was sold to the Yankees. He was waived by Cincinnati to the Boston Braves in 1935. With ERA of 2.95 and under for the Braves, he won a career-high 17 games in 1936, and 14 in both 1937 and 1938. After his playing career, MacFayden was a longtime coach at Bowdoin College.
