Darold Knowles

The fast-working reliever earned 143 career saves. In his rookie year, while Knowles was saving 13 for the Phillies, manager Gene Mauch said, “He’s got the courage of a daylight burglar.” Pitching for the last-place Senators in 1970, he lost an ML-record 14 in relief yet saved 27 with a 2.04 ERA. In 54 games with Oakland in 1972 he registered a superb 1.36 ERA. He became the only pitcher ever to appear in all seven games of a World Series, saving two in Oakland’s victory over the Mets in 1973. On his retirement, he was tied for 13th in career saves.
