Motley made the Royals and won a regular job through determination and tireless effort. In 1984 he produced his best season, finishing second or third on the Royals in most offensive categories. He had power, but lack of patience at the plate kept him from becoming a much more productive hitter. A 62-point drop in batting average in 1985 caused his relegation to platooning.
