As a rookie in 1941, the rugged Newsome led the Red Sox in wins and innings pitched, going 19-10 despite a 4.13 ERA. He was supported by an all-star offense that hit .283 (17 points above the league average) and included Ted Williams‘s .406 bat. Newsome won only eight games in each of his two subsequent ML seasons.
