Schofield started as an 18-year-old and played 19 seasons in the majors, mostly as a utility infielder. In 1963-64 as Pittsburgh’s regular shortstop, he had back-to-back .246 BA’s, nearly 20 points above his career average. Although a notoriously weak hitter, he was used as a pinch-hitter more than 300 times. His son, also named Dick, came up with the Angels in 1983.
