Doug Bird

Bird had a lively fastball, a nasty slider, and a palm ball. A reliever in five of his six years with Kansas City, he saved 20 as a rookie and went 11-4 with 14 saves in 1977. When he left KC after the 1978 season, he held the club’s career marks in(?-h)h)h)games pitched and saves. Over a three-year span with the Phillies, Columbus (International League), and the Yankees, Bird had an 18-game winning streak. The day after he finally lost (6/11/81), the Yankees traded him to the Cubs.
