A Phillies standout, McQuillan was 23-17 (1.53) in 1908, his first full season, and led the NL with a 1.60 ERA two years later. He was called “The Giant Killer” for his domination over New York. After illness and arm problems caused his drop to the minors, he survived a fearful blow to the head by a line drive off the bat of Tiger slugger Claude Rossman. Reacquired from Pittsburgh by the 1915 Phillies as pennant insurance, he contributed four vital victories late in the season.
