Geisel’s complaints in 1937 about the slickness of new baseballs led to the ML adopting the special deglossing mud with which all balls are now rubbed before they go into play. On April 16, 1940, Geisel was behind the plate as Bob Feller blanked Chicago in the only Opening Day no-hitter.
