Lohrke gained the nickname Lucky when he was called off the Spokane (Western International League) team bus 15 minutes before its departure. Lohrke was headed for Triple-A; the bus was headed for disaster. It crashed into a ravine, killing eight players. Lohrke went on to become the Giants regular third baseman in 1947 and a utility man thereafter.
