Jerry Dale

Dale was umpiring the sixth game of the 1977 WS when Reggie Jackson homered three times. A former pitcher in the Senators’ organization, Dale was a NL umpire for 15 seasons before being dismissed, over his bitter objections, for “lack of mobility” resulting from a knee injury. Dale earned his Ph.D. from Pepperdine University. His masters thesis examined personality differences between 92 student umpires and active ML umpires. He began leading yearly photographic safaris to Kenya in 1972.
