A line-drive hitter but a defensive liability at third base and shortstop for the Yankees, Lumpe was traded to the A’s in 1959 and became a steady second baseman. In 1962 he reached career highs in average (.301), HR (10), and RBI (83) and put together a 20-game hitting streak.
