French was a light-hitting backup catcher whose fine batting eye and ability to throw out baserunners weren’t enough to keep him in the lineup. He was hampered by a 1966 leg injury, and was most used in 1969 and 1970, when he had more walks than hits each season. A horse named after French finished second in the 1971 Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes.
