Although only a weak-hitting utility man in three ML seasons, Altobelli was successful as a manager. He was Manager of the Year three times in 11 minor league seasons, and earned the same honor in 1978 when he brought the San Francisco Giants in third. In 1983, his first year as manager of the Orioles, he won the AL pennant and defeated the Phillies in the WS.
