The 6’1″ 190-lb Bowman was one of two 20-game losers with the last-place 1936 Phillies, and 33-38 in five years with stronger Pirate teams. After a sore arm and a sojourn in the minors, he bounced back with a 12-8 season for the wartime Red Sox. Often used as a pinch hitter, he twice batted over .300.
