Mario Cuomo

Before entering law school and embarking on a political career, Cuomo played centerfield for the Class D Brunswick (Georgia) Pirates in 1952. He was hitting .353 when he injured his wrist in a collision with the outfield fence, and later spent two weeks in the hospital after being hit in the head with a pitch. He finished the season hitting .244 with one home run and 26 RBI in 81 games and retired from professional baseball. In 1976 Cuomo was elected Governor of New York, and in the late 1980s he was a proponent of bringing an expansion ML franchise to Buffalo.
