The Tigers starting second baseman as a rookie, Kavanagh lost his job to Ralph Young in 1915 but remained a handy backup, playing every position except pitcher and catcher. After leading the AL with 10 pinch hits in 1915 he was given 46 pinch at-bats in 1916, but hit only .152.
