Mellie Wolfgang

The 150-pound Wolfgang was rejected by three ML teams as too small despite three 20-win seasons in the minors. He hooked on with the White Sox in 1914 and won nine games, using mainly a spitball and curve. His greatest thrill came when he beat Walter Johnson 2-1 (8/29/14) while making a record-tying 11 assists. Two days later he beat Johnson again in a relief appearance. When illness limited his play in 1917-18, he became the White Sox’ batting-practice pitcher.
