Ray Washburn

Washburn was a $50,000 bonus baby who was 12-9 in his rookie 1962 season. He was off to a better year in 1963 when he suffered a shoulder muscle tear, and it took several years to regain his effectiveness. His 10-7, 3.53 and 14-8, 2.26 marks helped the Cardinals to pennants in 1967-68. Washburn pitched a no-hitter against San Francisco on September 18, 1968; the Giants hit only two balls out of the infield. He won Game Three of the 1968 World Series but was hit hard in Game Six. Washburn was knocked out of the box in the third inning without retiring a batter as the Tigers scored a record-tying ten runs that inning.
