Red Flaherty

An AL umpire for 21 years, Flaherty became involved in perhaps his most heated argument in Fenway Park in 1960 when he called Red Sox runner Don Buddin safe at the plate after the Tigers seemingly had caught him in a rundown. Flaherty ruled that the catcher had missed the tag. The Tigers countered that Buddin had run out of the baseline. Cal Hubbard, AL supervisor of umpires, happened to be in the stands that day. He supported Flaherty’s call completely.
