A classic WWII player, Schalk returned to the majors at age 35, 12 years after a three-game 1932 tryout with the Yankees. He was the White Sox’ second baseman in 1944 and 1945, finishing among the league leaders in four fielding categories. He led AL second basemen with 65 RBI in ’45.
