One of only five native Russians in ML history, Schauer was pitching with a semi-pro team in Garrison, ND, when the Giants bought him for $10,000. He was much-talked-about when he went 28-6 for Superior (Northern League, Class C) and was brought up to New York. Yet he was unable to win in the majors, and he saw the most action in his last season, 1917, going 7-16 for the Athletics.
