Fittingly, he was behind the plate for the longest Southern Association game, a 23-inning tie between Atlanta and Chattanooga in 1919. Johnson, who received his nickname for a voice that “resembled the blast of a Mississippi River side-wheeler,” published a book about umpiring called Standing the Gaff in 1935.
