Crawford never became the homegrown superstar the Dodgers anticipated when they signed him out of Los Angeles’s Fremont High School for $100,000. In the majors at 17 and in the WS at 19, he struggled for consistency and eventually became a better-than-average player. In his best season, 1973, he hit .295, with 14 homers and 91 RBI.
