Meyer was a minor league batting champ who hadn’t blossomed with the Tigers when chosen by Seattle in the 1976 expansion draft. The left-handed hitter was the Mariners’ first-ever first baseman and had career highs of 22 HR and 90 RBI in their inaugural 1977 season. In 1979 an injury to Bill Stein forced Meyer to move to third base, a position he had not played in the majors, but his hitting was not affected; he earned Player of the Month honors in June with a 21-game hitting streak. He played left field in 1980 but was traded to the A’s after a disappointing 1981. He left the Mariners as their all-time leader in seven offensive categories, including HR (64) and RBI (313). With Oakland, Meyer was a handyman and pinch hitter until his release in May 1985.
