First signed by the Royals, Corbett was claimed by the Twins off Cincinnati’s roster in the 1979 major league draft. In 1980, the sinkerballer set AL rookie records with 73 appearances and 23 saves. He saved 17 games with an AL-high 54 appearances in strike-shortened 1981. The Twins sent him to California in a 1982 trade for Tom Brunansky, but Corbett proved a disappointment. He spent parts of 1982 through 1985 in the minors, and did not record a save in 1983 or ’85. His toughness was questioned; he would warn hitters, “Look out,” when he’d accidentally let loose inside. He made a comeback of sorts in 1986, saving 10 for the AL West Champion Angels, and winning LCS Game Four.
