Fornieles had a spotty career as a starter/reliever, with a lifetime 18-31 record as a starter. But when the Cuban was used exclusively in relief by the Red Sox, he achieved success. In 1960 he went 10-5 and led the league with 14 saves (not then an official statistic) and an AL-record 70 appearances, and in 1961 he had a career-high 15 saves and made the All-Star team.
