The hustling, 5’6″ McFarland hit the White Sox’ first-ever grand slam, on May 1, 1901. He had a close call the following spring training in Excelsior Springs, MO, when manager Clark Griffith took his players on a 10-mile run. Griffith, McFarland, and two others were halfway over a train trestle high over a ravine when they heard a train approaching. With no time, Griffith ordered his men to grab a railroad tie and dangle over the river. After the train rumbled past, teammates ran to pull them up.
